Been wondering a bit about how Tucker's Naval Brigade was formed. Semmes' brigade had clearly two distinct regiments, but it seems that Tucker's didn't. I would think that, containing men of four separate squadrons, the organization would be quite easy, but apparently not. Here are the officers of the Brigade that surrendered at Appomattox, organized by Squadron:

Charleston Squadron:
Lt. William G. Dozier, CSS Indian Chief commander
Asst. Surg. George N. Halstead, CSS Charleston
Carpenter Nathaniel G. Gayle, squadron HQ
Actg. Master's Mate George C. Lyon
Actg. Master's Mate C. J. Yonge
Gunner George M. Thompson, CSS Palmetto State

Wilmington Squadron:
Gunner John A. Lovett, CSS North Carolina

Savannah Squadron:
Lt. Washington Gwathmey, CSS Georgia commander, and Brigade Commander
Lt. Charles K. King Jr., CSS Georgia
Actg. Master's Mate J. D. Graves, CSS Savannah

James River Squadron:
Lt. Hilary Cenas, Battery Semmes
Surg. Francis L. Galt, Batteries HQ
Actg. Master George W. Smith, CSS Torpedo (attached to Batteries)
Actg. Master's Mate William B. Littlepage, CSS Nansemond
Actg. Master's Mate William Smith, CSS Torpedo (attached to Batteries)
Midm. E. B. Trescott, CSS Patrick Henry

Marine Corps:
Lt. Richard H. Henderson
Lt. Francis H. Cameron, Drewry's Bluff Battery
2nd Lt. W. H. McCune
2nd Lt. Henry M. Doak

Unknown:
Asst. Surg. G. E. Sussdorf

Any idea how the various squadrons' men were organized? Undoubtedly there must have been a commander for each squadrons' complement.

William H. Parker, in his memoir, notes the naval personnel from Savannah, Charleston, and Wilmington sent to Richmond were formed into a brigade to act as heavy artillery in the river batteries... alongside the CS Marines etc.

John T. Scharf, in his history of the CS Navy, notes Tucker's brigade was organized into companies, and while manning the batteries were drilled as infantry etc.

Scharf records an anecdote, that General Lee had evidently requested naval officers, etc. to man the heavy artillery batteries...

While the officers and men of the Richmond Squadron scuttled their vessels, and escaped to Danville at the fall of Richmond, Tucker's naval brigade joined Lee's army, and was mostly captured at Saylor's Creek on April 6, 1865:

Scharf states Tucker's command in the battle included 300 seamen, and 200 CS Marines under Major Simmons.

Robert Stiles recalled Tucker's naval command forming into line of battle...

The Confederacy had a larger navy than I had previously realized.
