Trivia Game # 62 - Week 4

From here on, we will be discarding past conventions of the game. Here are 5 official questions and 5 more "just for fun" questions. (Throwing in the "Kitchen Sink": some questions that I was unable to develop or couldn't find enough documentation to use.)

Here are the questions for Week 4 of Game # 62

1. At Gettysburg, Captain Hurt's unit had these. No other unit on the battlefield had them. What were they?

2. Two sons of an adopted son of a U.S. president served in the Confederate army. One was mortally wounded at Chickamauga, the other was an artillery commander at Vicksburg. Name them.

3. Both future generals were serving as captains at West Coast posts when their resignations from the army became official, a single day apart, in 1854. Each had married a sister of his West Point roommate. Early in the war, General "A" served under General "B". By the end of the war, both now in the East, General "B" served under general "A". Name Generals "A" and "B".

4. Not commonly known as a poet, this politician's last documented verse, the subject of which was a famous Civil War battle, was written on July 19, 1863. Name him.

5. The first cousin of the commander of one of the major armies of the Civil War, he served on the staffs of J.E.B. Stuart, Robert E. Lee, and Wade Hampton. Twenty years after the war his book about one of his commanders was published. Name him.

======

(6.) An extra, special non-credit question - a "Dillsburg question". Our former Trivia Mod, Hoosier, gave me this question in August, but we were unable to figure out just how to frame it. So just for fun and to see what happens, I'll post the question as originally poised:

What Union general, born in a town whose natives can rightfully call themselves Hoosiers, has a middle name that is the same as the mascot of a Big Ten university?

(7.) What nephew of a famous secessionist stole his uncle's horse while serving as head of Gen. Sherman's escort on the March through Georgia?

(8.) What two brothers, sons of South Carolina, enlisted in a Union Tennessee cavalry regiment?

(9.) This Confederate staff officer to Jackson and Gordon, among others, presumably did not live in a garbage can, but it is possible that he was his great-grandson's inspiration for a "Grouch". Name the staff officer.

(10.) After participating in The Battle of New Market as a VMI cadet, he served as ADC to a Confederate general. He died 80 years after the year the Civil War started. Name him.

Answers are due by 6pm (eastern) on Saturday, October 10. Good Luck!

I had hoped that our players would not simply answer "Whitworth Rifles", as this might be confused with the Whitworth "sniper" rifle, but since the big Whitworths are often referred to as "Whitworth Rifles", I will accept that answer.

The Whitworth "sniper" rifle, by the way, was apparently the weapon used to kill General John Sedgwick at Spotsylvania. It could also be used to shoot elephants at long distances.

Hoosier's answer had me scrambling (as his answers oft do) to figure out what's what. Seems a whole bunch of questions might be developed out of the curious fact that Andrew Jackson, the President one, had no natural born children (that we know about?), but several adopted children (Jacksons, Donelsons, Hutchings, and Butlers).
Did you know that Fort Donelson was named after Andrew Jackson Donelson?
If I had been able to figure this out earlier, a better question than mine might have been: "Two sons of adopted sons of a U.S. president served in the Confederate army. Both were wounded at Stones River, and both were captains when killed from wounds at the Battle of Chickamauga. Name them."
Answer: Captain Samuel Jackson and Captain John Samuel Donelson
One more: What Confederate general was promoted to Major General but whose confirmation happened five days after his death, the promotion to be effective the same day that he died?
Answer: Daniel Smith Donelson
We haven't even touched on Andrew Jackson Hutchings, or the Butlers, but I can imagine that if we investigated all these adopted "offspring" we'd come up with all sorts of interesting stuff.

Not sure if Oxkern is still traveling or has lost interest, but sarladaise has informed me that she would be traveling in the U.S. for some time, and I expect she is still roaming about as I have not seen any responses from her at the CWI Trivia Game. Which reminds me to tell you that, if no one of our members will volunteer to pick up the Trivia flag, you might try Javal's game for your trivia fix.

Here are the scores after Week 4 of Game #62:

FIRST DIVISION

Larry - 17
Sarladaise - 15
Sockknitter - 15

SECOND DIVISION

Hoosier - 11
Oxkern - 0

Well, since we are down to 3 players, maybe it is a great time to bow out. I wish more of you could be around for the big finish, but I suppose General Lee had the same idea.

Thanks for playing. See you next week for our last waltz!
