From The National Museum of Civil War Medicine (with permission) - seen this with my own eyes - this must have been a great improvement from lugging someone by the arms and legs - especially for the victim - but this had to be heavy too!
The Coolidge stretcher was one of many models developed in the United States through the course of the war.
You can see this Coolidge stretcher on display in the exhibits of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick.
