The 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, also known as Rush's Lancers, was incorporated into the Army of the Potomac on October 5, 1861. Their first commanding officer was Colonel Richard Rush. At the request of General George McClellan they were equipped with nine foot lances with triangular blades, which supplemented their sabers and revolvers. The lances were eventually replaced with carbines in 1863 due to the ineffectiveness of the lance when combat was at close quarters.
