Here's a list of my ancestors, great-uncles and some of my cousins who served. Most of them are from dad's side. Three of my mom's four grandparents were the children/grandchildren of people born in Europe, so there aren't a lot of people to find.

Franklin Field Sanderson- 3rd great-grandfather. 1st Iowa Cavalry .
William MC Alexander - 3rd great-grandfather 24th Indiana (my mom's side)
John Almer Lewin 4th-great-grandfather. 3rd Iowa Infantry. He fought in the Battle of Blue Mills Landing,Shiloh,Vicksburg, Siege of Jackson,MS. He got sick/was wounded in Shiloh and was sent to Indiana, didn't come back to his unit until July 1862. Captured in Dec 1863 outside of Vicksburg (his unit was still there) while foraging. Sent to Fort Morgan and then to Andersonville where he died.

George Lester Pool 3rd Light Artillery from Indiana He lost his eye after getting kicked by a horse

Good job. I have just tried to find out about my direct ancestors and my wife's direct ancestors, and even that has been challenging. We have found perhaps 10 of 14 who would have been the right age to have served.

I'm fairly certain that my direct ancestor list is imcomplete. I know nothing about my dad's paternal grandmother's mother's family. I know they lived in Missouri and that's it.
