Rick Featherston

Our comrade @Rick Featherston passed away on August 15, 2026 at 1:01am CST. He was a longtime member of Hood's Texas Brigade Associated Re-Activated(HTBAR). He had a direct ancestor in the 1st Texas Infantry and he was a documented collateral descendant of Brig. Gen. Winfield Scott Featherston(CSA). He didn't post a lot here in CWT but he attended the 2020, 2021 and 2022 CWT Musters. During Covid, he sat in on a lot of the Wednesday night Zoom presentations here in CWT. I also had the pleasure of his company at several Annual Jefferson TX Civil War Symposiums and at least one Baton Rouge Civil War Roundtable Symposium. He, myself, @Ole Miss and @J. D. Stevens were all in attendance at that event in 2019.

I first met Rick in November 2015 at the Annual HTBAR Seminar. I have attended 4 other Annual HTBAR Seminars and he was at all of them. My first road trip with him was in June 2016 during the HTBAR Group Tour of Chickamauga. I flew into Chattanooga a couple of days early. Rick, myself and another Texan made a day trip to Franklin from Chattanooga the day before our group tour started. It was a day I'll never forget.

The picture above is him at Parker's Crossroads in October 2022. We stopped there on the way to the 2022 CWT Muster in Murfreesboro/Franklin.

I last saw him 3 weeks ago today at the 2026 HTBAR Annual Membership Meeting in Chappell Hill, TX.

He was a great guy. He will be missed.

Oh no! I spent quality time with him in Murfreesboro talking about his ancestor's role in Hood's Retreat from Nashville. Primarily Anthony's Hill and Sugar Creek. Great guy with a great southern lineage.

This really saddens me. And so very sorry for your loss, Bobby.

In June 2017, Rick and I went on a 9 day Civil War trip. Visited many sites the first 8 days. The 9th day was a travel day. Rick was not yet a member of CWT, so I respected his digital privacy and didn't post any pictures of him and used his first name only.

Posted a long thread about it here. Rick was at all those places too. Here is the thread.

Returned on Sunday afternoon from a 9 day CW sightseeing road trip. The 9th day was strictly a travel day. The other 8 days were some traveling and lots of sightseeing with some unplanned stops and pleasant surprises. It'll take a while to finish this thread. Did a lot in 8 days and took 800+ pics and had multiple wargasms. I could easily bust up this thread into several different threads in different forums but that's not how I roll. In addition to CW sites there will be some commentary on hotels/motels,restaurants etc. for Civil War Traveler's Companion. I have already added some...

He had a lot of close friends. He was very personable.

Rick let me ride along with him during our Antietam Muster 2021. I first got to know him at the Shiloh Muster 2020 as we spent some time discussing battles and books. He became my buddy when I found out that my ancestor served in his ancestor's brigade for almost 2 years. I kept him updated with photos and topics related to his ancestor here in Mississippi.

Rick is standing in the back row under the "IL" part of the Shiloh Battlefield sign. I first met Rick at the 2020 Shiloh CWT Muster. @UCVRelics @redbob et al organized that fantastic event that took place during COVID. [You can see we were all diligent in masking. ]

It was a great event - one of my favorites of all time. Rick came with @bdtex Everyone enjoyed meeting him and spending time with him. Rick was a gifted communicator. He had a way of looking you in the eye during conversation that made you feel seen, heard, and understood. Like you were important to him and he wanted to hear and understand what you had to say. I don't know how else to explain it.

The next year was the Antietam Muster which was another amazing event organized by @NH Civil War Gal . Here's a pic of me and Rick from that 2021 Muster.

In 2022, @UCVRelics outdid himself again with the Stones River/Franklin CWT Muster. Here's a picture I snapped of Rick and Tex at the dinner UCV hosted in honor of his late father "The Chief"

Rick didn't make the 2023 Muster in the Shenandoah Valley or the 10th Annual CWT Muster at Fredericksburg in 2025. @UCVRelics or @bdtex did he make 2024 in Mobile?

Anyway, just wanted to share some memories of our friend Rick Featherston. I imagine his ancestor General Featherston was looking down, so proud of Rick's interest in Civil War History. I know Rick was welcomed into the kingdom with open arms and he is now whole and free of pain. Rest in peace my friend.

Great pictures. Thx for posting them. I believe he was on vacation overseas during the 2024 Muster in Mobile/Spanish Fort/Fort Blakeley. His memorial service was in Tyler yesterday.
