Member Review Population Changes by State 1860-1870

The 1860 United States census was the eighth census conducted in the United States starting June 1, 1860, and lasting five months.
It determined the population of the United States to be 31,443,321 in 33 states and 10 organized territories.
(remember some states didn't start to secede until Dec 20th, 1860)
1870 census showed it at 38,925,598.
22.6% * 31 million = 7,006,000 increase.

I computed all the changes, but the story is grim. Out of deference to the Confederate advocates here, I'll refrain from posting the spreadsheet unless there is some desire to see it. The population growth rate for the US for that decade was 22.6%.
How many were German and Irish immigrants?

What was the % growth from 1850 to 1860?

1850 census to 1860 census was 35.6%
Are we talking 1860 for Irish and German immigrants?
1861–1870 - 435,778 Irish immigrants
1860 census show 1.275 million German Immigrants
I'm part German (Grandmother-mother) and Irish (dad mom)

After the Potato famine for the Irish 1840, the estimated population was 990,000 immigrants. In 1850 census show 207,000 immigrants. A big declined from the decade before.

Texas did OK. From 604,000 in 1860 to 818,000 in 1879, 35% gain. Even better from 1870-80, 818,000 to 1,591,000, a gain of 93%. How 'bout them apples!

Precisely. The first decade saw important growth. The release from slavery had multiple benefits. But the next decade brought railroad investment and explosive growth. Missouri grew immediately during the 1860 decade.

Is there any information on how many Southerns left their home state and moved west or north after the war looking for better opportunities? I think there was quite a bit of moving around, especially going west.
