What if General Lee had insisted in August of 1863 that his health did permit him to continue to command the Army of Virginia?
What if Grant had persuaded Julia that for the sake of appearances she would have tolerate Mary Todd Lincoln for one more evening, and the Grant's had attended the theater show with security arranged by Beckwith, Comstock, Fred Dent, and other Grant guardians?
What if General Halleck had realized the opportunity when Farragut got upriver from Baton Rouge and supported Farragut's warships in a combined arms operation against Vicksburg?
What if President Lincoln had agreed in the Summer of 1864 that Grant could bring Schofield's army out of Tennessee and transport it to form an enclave in North Carolina, as happened nearly a year later in 1865?
What if George McClellan had seen the value in retaining Rosecrans as in executive officer when McClellan was promoted? And what McClellan had retained Grant when Grant was looking for a command, and McClellan had found a brigade for Grant so that Grant started one level higher?
Think of other what ifs that would lead to faster and less revolutionary result.

I think that would be interesting to explore. I was not aware this was proposed, do you have more details on this, because I'm half a mind to look into this.
