I recently bought this NC seal button (or what's left of it) from a seller on eBay, he said it was dug at Bentonville sometime in the 1960s.
It stood out to me as a pretty unique piece, it still has some brass shimmer to it from being dug only around a century after the war. it's actually flipped entirely inside-out, what would be the exterior of the button lies in the crease of where the button folded on itself.
With such catastrophic damage one conjures up exciting and morbid theories involving the button taking a bullet or shell frag hit, although it's impossible to tell for certain the cause. Being familiar with Bentonville and the surrounding area, I believe the cause lies more in the decades of agricultural activity in the area after the war rather than the 3 days of fighting there in 1865.
The most likely culprit, to me, seems to be a plow, bush-hog or some other kind of agricultural machinery. What do y'all think?
