Hi all. Been reading some on John Brown and the 950 pikes he ordered from Connecticut blacksmith, Charles Blair.
Edmund Ruffin attended the Brown execution, and was able to acquire several of the captured pikes. Of these, he sent one to each governor of the slaveholding states, with the exception of Delaware.
I'm curious about these gifted pikes. Anyone aware of what became of them? Have any been retained, and perhaps displayed in a state museum? I'm asking specifically about those that were sent to the states, with Ruffin's message of warning.
Also, is there an explanation for the exclusion of Delaware? I'm assuming that Delaware's slave population was extremely low at that point, and Ruffin believed their dedication to "the cause" was not worth his effort. But maybe more to the story?
Any additional information? Thanks!
