I spotted this tweet while browsing online today. It's from the X account of a historian I follow. I thought fellow members would enjoy it.

My dad remembers the pre decimal Irish currency. His first wage was in that format. I remember the Irish punt (pound) but my first pay packet and first time I ordered a beer was in the Euro.
My Parent were both born in Ireland. My first visit over there in the '60's the old money was still being used. One of my Aunts gave me a sample of all the coins starting with the Farthing, which even then was just about extinct.

My grandparents were from Millstreet. Grandma said two Civil War veterans lived in Millstreet. One Union and one Confederate. The Union veteran received a pension while the Confederate didn't. John Noonan was in the 88th New York and Nicholas Pomeroy the 5th Texas. Timothy Corkery makes at least 3 veterans returning to Millstreet.

That's pretty cool, @SJU.

Any idea why he went back home?
This article has a ton of info on Nicholas Pomeroy. He and John Noonan were at some major battles on opposite sides. Both men were wounded at Gettysburg.

Looks like the sailor was Jeremiah O'Donoghue. Timothy Corkery looks like a son in law sending the bill.

Excellent read, thank you.
