Extra uniforms and gear in storage?

When regiments went on Campaign they put extra uniforms, equipment, and gear in storage. Did the Army build warehouses to store all this in? Were tents used? Either way, all the stuff in storage would need to be guarded. Let us say a unit in 1861 went off on Campaign and put extra gear in storage in Washington. Three years later they go back to Washington to retrieve their stuff in storage, would all their items still be there in some Army warehouse?
