Colourisations

Hi all!
Here in this thread I'm going to be uploading quite a number of colourised photos I did with the assistance of ChatGPT. Now, I make no claim to having any talent for colourisation; I just upload them to ChatGPT, give a few prompts and let it do it's thing. From there I take the photo and adjust the saturation, brightness, exposure, etc. Still, I quite like the results and I hope you do too 🙂

Be careful, as some of these conversions have a strange idea of color, especially color-change. Grey uniforms turn brown and red has a nasty habit of turning brown, field grey, blue or grey. Blue has similar problems too!

Yeah, it also has a curious habit of giving blue eyes to someone with obviously dark eyes, which I correct by running it through again but most of the time I just roll with the punches and try to keep the uniform looking as close to the original colour as it appears to be. With Confederate officers that can be quite difficult as there seems to have been a number of uniform styles and shades whereas with the Union officers it's generally quite a bit easier as their uniforms were, well, uniform. Still, I love the details that it brings out in the face.

You can bring detail out in the face by adjusting 'Exposure' or even Brightness and Contrast and keeping it monochrome. After all, that is only what the programs are doing and choosing a color to go with the shade. The best color photos are the rare ones actually using a color-sensitive film or the 'tinted' ones.

I've found with ChatGPT that there is an actual 'technique' to getting the best results, which, 80% of the time are going to give you a pretty accurate and impressive outcome in terms of detail, though one will invariably have to adjust the brightness, saturation, exposure, etc, to get the best looking 'end product'. I've personally found it invaluable.

And, I forgot to mention, that on the occasions when the results aren't exactly as you desired, running it back through again with quite specific prompts will almost always get you where you want to be. It's never really failed me.
