I'll try and keep this short and to the point. I'm attempting to research and prove that up to 6 companies of the 25th Virginia Infantry were present, and I need some help from the community, either in research or to help steer me in the right direction. This is because I have an ancestor in the 25th VA Inf. who was present at Bulltown, but no records seem to exist that prove the 25th was there too.
Currently it seems to be widely known that the 19th and 20th VA CAV were present, as well as 2 artillery pieces. "he organized a taskforce of about 700 men, composed of his own 19th Virginia Cavalry commanded by LieutenantColonel W. P. Thompson...part of the 20th Virginia Cavalry underColonel W. W. Arnett... a detachment of six infantry companies, andthe Virginia Battery, two guns under Captain Warren A. Lurty ofClarksburg" (Stutler 1963:248). (https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/tr/pdf/ADA116784.pdf).
Now...I'm trying to track down CS records (that were probably burned at Richmond later) that somehow show/prove it was the 25th's detachment. The 31st and 25th worked together a lot from what I can tell, and most if not all were raised in what is now W Virginia. Perhaps some of both. Again....guesswork based on the clues I've patched together. The men frequently requested to be transferred closer to home.
My ancestor was in 2nd Company K, 25th VA Infantry. I have a lot of tabs open on my computer but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I submitted a request for his military service record from the national archives but have heard nothing back as of yet.
Thank you.
