Battle of Brown's Mill, July 30th 1864

Visiting with military family in Georgia and had an opportunity to get out on a hot July day for some nearby civil war trekking. A bonus was the approaching 160th anniversary of this Atlanta campaign cavalry engagement.

Salute and hat tip to Coweta County, Georgia for excellent trails and overall upkeep of this site. It appears to be appreciated and well visited by hikers and bikers. I'll include the online link with short videos that is an excellent resource explaining this battle. The signage along the trails with veteran information was also a nice touch and would be a great idea for all battlefield trails (both Union and Confederate).

Walking the trails and thinking about how much of an all out unmounted slug match this must have been between McCook and Wheeler cav troops. Dense woods and challenging terrain. I included a picture of a straight up incline I walked heading back from the monument. I got a much needed cardio workout. While trekking I kept thinking how much Wheeler must have been relieved that McCook ran out of munitions for the two 3 inch guns that held Confederates at bay. A Confederate cavalry victory in the western theatre without Forrest???! Say it aint so!

I swung over to the historic town of Newnan and visited the Confederate section in Oak Hill Cemetery. Some of the soldiers killed at Brown's Mill are interred here. Was pleasantly surprised with this little town. Lots of little shops and mom & pop stores along the downtown sidewalks. Some really beautiful 19th century antebellum homes as well. My wife and I will return back for a visit when we have a longer stay.

I'm a life long Virginian and this was my very first CW outing in Georgia.

I highly recommend anyone interest in the Atlanta Campaign pick up David Evans' "Sherman's Horseman". A massive chunk of its chapters cover the Stoneman-McCook Raid in exquisite detail, and Brown's Mill in particular. Great read, find yourself a copy.

I enjoyed Evan's book very much. I will say there is still alot to be discovered and rewritten on this action. Ashby's and Harrison's Brigades were split and combined in a way that has gone unrecorded by historians. Part of Ashby's(5th and 1st TN) and part of Harrison's (8th and 11th TX) were the ones that opposed Maj. Paine's faint and the ones who killed him(they note him as a gallant officer in their reports). Red Jackson's exact route to get in front of McCook upon the latter's retreat also has to be better defined. My ggGrand Dad JM Cash was in the 5th Tenn. Cav. and they fought this battle and chased naked Col. Brownlow across the Chattahoochie.

I will say there is still alot to be discovered and rewritten on this action.
I was glad to stumble across this battlefield site and learn it's history. It really is a riveting story of battle that had alot of back and forth action. Coweta County and it's residents are commended for preserving this site and ensuring it's history is not lost to time and development.

Did you go to the hill up where the 18th Indiana unlimbered, and where the Cook cabin was? There is PVC marking, I believe, places where cadaver dogs recently uncovered bodies from the battle.
