136th New York infantry monument

The 136th doesn't get enough credit for their sacrifice at Gettysburg in my opinion.
They were raised in my area of Wyoming county N.Y and also recruited from my hometown. They were nicknamed "the ironclads" Gettysburg was their first real taste of combat.

Smith's Brigade, including the 136th NY had some of the longest sustained contact with the Confederates. They actively skirmished from the night of July 1 to the morning of July 4.

The flank markers for that monument are about as far apart as any that I have ever seen at Gettysburg.

Despite being inexperienced they held their lines. While being harassed by confederate sharpshooters which killed, Elias gage aged 26. He was a father of 2 girls
His youngest was born in 1863 and he never got to meet her.
His older brother Joshua was also in the same company and watched him die. his death hit him hard. He died July 30th 1863 from Disease aged 28

Accidentally killed by friendly fire

Private Christian Rohlfing was a member of Company I of the 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry which held their ground at the High Water Mark at the Angle in Gettysburg.
He Had his head blown off by friendly fire from Cushing's Battery during Pickett's Charge.
He was 18 years old

The McKinney brothers

Private McKinney was already dead when the Gettysburg battle occurred. He had contracted typhoid fever and had died in the army hospital in Alexandria, Virginia on February 24th, 1863. Eliza McKinney had her son's body transferred to the newly dedicated Soldiers' National Cemetery.

The McKinneys were a typical farming family of the Gettysburg area with six children. John was the oldest of the family at the age of 19 when he died. The next brother, Robert, Jr., was also a member of Company K, and survived the war. The third son of the family, Andrew, enlisted in another local unit, the 21st Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, at the young age of 14. He died the next year, July 17, 1864, of disease at City Point, Virginia.
