I got to see this Saturday night in Lincoln and it was actually quite good. The story focuses on the arrival of Mary Lincoln's half-sister, Emilie Todd Helm, shortly after her Confederate general's death at Chickamauga. Feature characters include Lincoln, Mary, Tad, Emilie, Katherine Helm, John Nicolay, William Slade and Elizabeth Keckley. The story revolves around the chaos of the White House following the passage of the EP and Lincon's sinking chance at reelection but more importantly how chaotic the house was with Mary mourning Willie's death and harboring an unrepentant Confederate widow at the White House.
It's more of a local play and I'm not sure if the playwright plans on taking the show on the road (I briefly spoke with her after the performance). The history is pretty good though it largely takes place in the background, but accounts are taken from what the participants had written after the war. The only error I caught was Emilie Helm referring to Bull Run AND Manassas as if they were different battles. An UN-Lincoln professor of American History consulted on the project. The playwright is also UN-Lincoln professor in the theater department. All in all, it was actually a really good play. I even told my wife I thought it was better than To Kill a Mockingbird with Richard Thomas we watched earlier this year! Anyway, wanted to share.
