I am just wondering if any of our members are intending to attend the 158th anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek living history event in Middletown, VA this upcoming weekend; October 15th and 16th?
I am hoping to attend as a spectator and would enjoy meeting any members that were also there. I have been attending as a spectator since 1993 and always enjoy the event. I have missed a few years hear and there, however, it has sort of become a pilgrimage for me because it is the only battle that my great grandfather, George E. Yingling, Comp. G(D) 87th PA, 1st Bgd., 3rd Div., 6th Corps, and my great, great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Bishop, Comp. C, 7th VA Cavalry, Rosser's Laurel Bgd. were both at. George fought on Red Hill above Belle Grove where the 6th Corps was camped and Tom was down at Cupp's Mill, a mile or two away, however, they were in opposing armies so I do say it is the only battle where they fought one another.
If you have never been to the event, I highly recommend it. It is one of only a few reenactments that actually occurs on part of the original battlefield. The Shenandoah Valley is spectacular this time of year and the trip is worth the beauty of the valley alone. It is usually a well attended moderate sized event and there are many Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry units present; so you can see demonstrations and learn all about all three of those types of military service. I always enjoy wandering through the soldier's camps. Not only do I get to see what camp life for my ancestors might have been like, I always meet such interesting people. I have spent hours talking to fascinating people, learning a lot, and sharing information.
Anyway, I am just interested to see if anyone else will be going this weekend.
