Help! The Camp Lawton/Millen Prison database contains the name of Richard A DeMont, Co C and H of the 12th Michigan Infantry. According to the Millen Roll of Honor, he died at Millen and was buried in Plot A108. I also have a findagrave record that says he died in French Lick IN in 1912. Is there anyone who can help me figure out what happened?

It would seem that the Millen database's death record is an error. Richard A. DeMont began as a 1st sergeant in Company C, 12th Michigan, and was later promoted to captain of Company H. According to the Official Army Register, Demont resigned from the army on November 15, 1864. He was later elected sheriff of Buchanan Township, Michigan.

According to Fold3, Demont was never even a POW. The name was likely confused for a different soldier.
