I have decided to write the story of my Great great grandparents and the journey they took getting to oregon. Daniel moore Ross and Sarah catherine Holt . My GG grandfather volunteered at age 27 already a skilled horseman for the union. 1st Massachusetts co. H cavalry. He served his full term even though he was shot. I need his military file to fill in some of the blanks. Like did he purchase his horse and what part did the bullet hit. Little details. I have the app. No and cert. No.

Good luck in your writing. I wrote a book about my wife's 5g grandfather and learned a lot in the process, but that was a Revolutionary War book and your research will be very different (hopefully easier).

Union Army provided horses. Corn-Fed did not.

1) Besides his service reord, don't forget to get his pension file and if Sarah applied for one to, read hers too. They are revealing.

2) Regimental History Reprint or for free on Archive.org same book free online (Daniel's picture on p411) (He's listed in the index as being on page 410 but I can't find him. Guess the indexer was bad).

3) Audio of A Boy Trooper With Sheridan's First Massachusetts Cavalry at Archive.org link 8 hr 47 min long. It's why I prefer printed books. Faster to read than listen. I suspect it's historical fiction.

4) Nathaniel Bowditch Memorial He was a lt. with the First Massachusetts

I cannot attest to the veracity of any of the above. Judge for yourself.

Note: If you buy from India (Gyan Books), get the hardback but not the fancier editions (leather bound). Save yore-self some ducats.
