Irene Triplett was the last person to ever receive a Civil War pension. She died on May 31, 2020.

She was the daughter of Private Mose Triplett, of the 26th North Carolina Infantry, although he deserted a few days before his unit was annihilated at Gettysburg, and later joined George W. Kirk's famed 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry (US).
The main reason that her mother (34 years old at the time of her birth) married her father (83 at that time) was that during the Great Depression, the twenty dollar pension given to surviving Union veterans was a boon to the many low-income families around at the time. By marrying one of these veterans, the pension could help sustain both the woman and her family, if she chose to have one.
