This is the Shields Museum. It was on the Gettysburg battlefield, along Chambersburg Pike, near the Buford and Reynolds monuments (you can see them in the background)across from the McPherson barn.

Mr. Arthur Shields was a collector of Gettysburg Civil War relics and memorabilia. He opened his museum in Gettysburg in 1925 and the museum featured many items recovered by Mr. Shields and others from the Battle of Gettysburg. The contents of the museum were sold in November, 1985 and most of the items are now in private collections.

Glenn (son of Arthur) noted that some of the relics were collected by farmers and town residents right after the two armies left on July 04, 1863. "The people wanted to sell it and my father bought it from them." Arthur Shields collected and sold artifacts until he died. After their father's death, Ellen continued to operate the concession stand, Glenn and Wayne maintained the displays. Glenn, Wayne, Ellen siad the park service had asked about buying the property when their father died, and again when their mother died. Genn said he will hold on to his memories of the museum. He chuckled as he recalled not being able to get up into the attic because "stacks" of muskets, rifles and artifacts stored there. Ellen said she recently took over 150 photographs of the building and the collection before it was closed. The photos will be mounted in an album to be peserved for the family. Glenn, Wayne and Ellen said their favorite items in the collection are the bullet-ridden door from the McPherson Barn, a Spencer rifle, and the remains of a wooden cannon carriage.

Here is the Mumper photography studio at Devil's Den circa 1895. In the bottom photo, Jacob Mumper is the only man in the photo.

David "Blind Davey" Weikert, who was injured in an accident for the Gettysburg Railroad in 1884 (although he told people he had fought at Gettysburg and was injured in battle--he was born in 1849, so that wasn't possible), had a souvenir stand in the photographic studio.

Just a few things to add..Observation tower on B R T...Trolley excursion....Dance hall near Devils Den..Think it was the Cotton Motel at picketts charge... Swiming pool Cemetery ridge...Airplane rides Seminary ridge... two homes a store and gas station along the Peach Orchord....Overhead electric and phone wires... the big privatly owned Observation tower.... Camp Colt....P.OW. camps WWII.... The Old visitors Center....And I'm sure there will be a lot more added....

The true elevation between Big and Little Round Top. In order to run the trolley line, the area had to be graded. The result is about 25 feet of fill so that the valley between them is not as deep.

I've read about Gettysburg for years, and I never knew that! Cool.

The white building on the left is the Stuckey's. This was taken from the Longstreet Tower in 1971. Can you spot the top of the PA Monument?

This is a two-fer: the Stuckey's and the National Tower in the background (left).

The Springs Hotel on the first day field. That place was a huge success when it first opened. Went by the wayside and someone turned it into a golf club. But now it's back in the hands of the NPS.
Anyone have a pic to post of the Springs Hotel?

Hey Pam, I've heard of an area around there referred to as "Pinch Gut" or something like that. Would that be where the Stuckies was located?

No, Pinch Gut is up the Emmitsburg Road (away from town) from where Stuckeys was near the Peach Orchard. It's at the intersection of Emmitsburg and Confederate Avenue, at what was the Snyder Farm (to the right after you cross Emmitsburg Pike).

Here's an older view of the same intersection, with Snyder Farm buildings.

If you go to the Civil War Trust Flickr link, there's another pic.

Here's the Katalysine Springs Hotel.

A view from the hotel cupola toward Seminary Ridge. In the bottom left corner is the horse-trolley used to bring visitors to the hotel.

The hotel sat on what used to be the Country Club, which is now owned by the NPS. Here's a shot looking the opposite way, from the Lutheran Seminary. The hotel is visible past Herbst/Reynolds woods, with the road leading toward it. The hotel burned down in 1917.

I don't have a picture of it but the Eagle Hotel. It was where John Buford spent the night of June 30th. Now there's a convenience store in that lot.
