interesting thread.
I had never heard of Subatai before. I read the wiki article....fascinating.
No Patton anyone, for the single battle?
and, no Caesar for the campaign? someone previously said in this thread, professionals study logistics....that was Caesar.
between Grant and Lee...I can see the argument for Lee for the single battle...but I also think of the old joke:Lee had a good ball club but couldn't win on the road.
grant could and did. so I go for Grant.

The "magnificent" Winfield Scott Hancock. Possessed all the fine qualities, and then some, to inspire and lead. Unflinching courage and devotion to duty.

I would Like to nominate John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and military genius and a political survivor.

Brilliant in both strategy and tactics and also was a lucky general.

Will win a battle when it has to be done and will always turn up ready to fight where the enemy will not be expecting him.

How about one of these two figures of history for ever linked together because they fought at one of the great Battles of History "Waterloo".

Arthur Wellesly 1st Duke of Wellington: He was never defeated by Napoleon or any of Napoleon's generals, a overlooked fact of history. He should be consider one of the military greats but for some reason it was Napoleon that defines their era.

Napoleon Bonaparte: He defend warfare and military tactics up and until our Civil war and won many victories against superior forces. One the the military greats of history he define an era...

Either one of these two Military Greats could be worthy as your go to man for one last great battle or campaign...
Actually Ney of all Marshals defeated the Duke twice---Pombal and Redinha. Additionally Wellington lost at Tordesillas and the sieges of Badajoz and Burgos.

My vote is for the Little Corporal
