Uniforms at Fallen Timbers

Hello All,

First, thanks for all the great tips on primary resources regarding Shiloh! They were marvelous!

I have a followup. I am doing research for a filmed reenactment which my company plans to undertake for a doc. on Shiloh. We take pride in our historical accuracy, and while we have good resources with regards to the main action at Shiloh, Apr. 6-7, we're lacking in information on the dress of the combatants at Fallen Timbers, April 8th, specifically those on the Confederate side under NB Forrest, which according to my sources comprised Wharton's Texas Rangers (formerly Terry's, later 8th Texas), and elements of the Forrest's 3rd Tennessee and Wirt Adam's Mississippi Cav.

Any comments, suggestions or directions to resources would be much appreciated!

Best,

BR

Some of the Yankee uniforms had holes in 'em. Okay, I couldn't resist. Sorry.

Might use the Search to see what pops up in the reenactor's forum. We've had a lot of good threads on....uh.....threads. Man, I'm on a roll tonight....

I suspect Tin Cup might show up eventually and have some info, or some of our other guys from out this direction. As we always say, be patient--someone will know. Good luck!

Wow, I'd love to see that footage. My g grandfather was a Praire Rover in the Texas Eighth. He dressed in gray trousers and a three-button cotton shirt topped with a frock coat and wore a Palmetto, given to him by his sweetheart. He also wrote about a friends red Hickory shirt.

Some of the men in Wharton's favored (according to my grandfather) Archer Gray's were given uniforms, by the wealthy plantation owner. Hollywood might imply they all dressed in cavalry uniforms, but I'd say most of the Texas Eighth dressed in whatever they had on? -Which could be quite extravagant in some cases

The only thing I can say with surety to help you is Forrest himself wore a flannel shirt that chilly morning under his uniform coat. We know that for sure because a piece of it went into him when he was shot at Fallen Timbers, and was removed during a second operation by the surgeon.
