Not only was York one of the few Northern born Confederate generals, he was also of Polish descent, according to Scott Patchan.

1864: Brigade Commander Battle of Monocacy in Maryland
1864: Wounded during Battle of Opequon Incapacitated from field
York was the commander of the Consolidated Louisiana Brigade, by that point withered down to 900 men between what had been two seperate brigades. He was the last permanant commander of the "Tigers", though he left for recruitment duty in the winter of 1864, leaving the brigade to Colonels like William Peck and Eugene Waggamann

That recruiting duty that he was assigned to after his wounding was in North Carolina Prison Camps amongst foreign-born Union prisoners. He was recruiting for the Louisiana troops.
I assumed this effort was intended to form specific foreign regiments, like Tucker's Regiment. But considering the state of the Tigers at that point in the war and how cut off from their homestate and recruits, it makes sense for the Tigers to try recruiting from foreign pow's, as most of their makeup was immigrants.

I wonder just how successful he was?

Lieutenant Colonel David Zable commanded the 14th Louisiana at Gettysburg (according to Confederate Military History, Extended Addition, vol. XIII Louisiana, p. 630)

Zable commanded the regiment two weeks prior to the battle, based on his official report of operations at Winchester dated June 15, 1863 (Official Reports, series I, vol. 27, pt. II)

Zable was still in command of the regiment two weeks after the battle, according to document he signed on July 16, 1863 (Official Reports, series I, vol. 27, pt. III)

When the 14th Louisiana was organized in August of 1861, the Colonel of the unit was Col. Valery Sulakowski.Originally it was known as Sulakowski's 1st Regiment Polish Brigade with York as major. He stepped up in rank when Sulakowski resigned in Feb.1862.The colonel, Richard W. Jones, resigned on August 10th, 1862 and York again stepped up in rank, this time to Colonel.
