I didn't know that Godey's Ladies Magazine was also technical manual... did you? I don't know who they thought their audience was. Did men read this magazine too? If you've flipped through the articles, normally there are sewing patterns, dinner recipes, poetry, fictional writing, and plenty of other women's interest content. I don't know why this was inserted in here in 1861, do you?

Wow, what an article; the author of the piece calls it a 'Lecture'. The style and slant of his writing this piece, though technical in some degree, still exhibits a certain flair for entertaining. It also uses examples more pertinent to the home, such as stove, water well, and knife sharpening, and really doesn't put them on the locomotive nor out to sea. My initial impression would be a sales factor for the safety and surety of travel, but this 'Lecture' was most definitely meant to entertain and educate.
