Oftentimes on CWT the temptation is great to carry the discussion/debate over into the 21st c. Blight will discuss his new work on Frederick Douglas with Coates in an upcoming discussion. With Coates it will bridge the centuries. Most definitely a guarantee.

Blight & Coates on Frederick Douglas

Ta-Nehisi Coates is a must investigate (for those who don't know about him), definitely must read. He wrote an article entitle Why Do Few Blacks Study the Civil War? His book We Were Eight Years in Power is a collection of essays written during the Obama Era. The title comes from a quote of Thomas E. Miller, a Reconstruction Era congressman from SC.

Coates is a journalist, author and lecturer. He has received a ton of awards including the prestigious, incredible "Genius Grant" from the Mac Arthur Foundation.
And........
He wrote the famous Black Panther comic book series.

I do have some issues with some of his work, e.g. The New Jim Crow. It's in the statistics. Ah yes! Statistics!! We can make them dance to any tune we want.
