What is this? Wooden cannonball?

I was fishing in Rock Creek Red Lodge Montana when what I thought was a trout came rolling towards me.
I reached down and this is what it was. I've showed it to a few old timers in the area and their first words were cannonball.
It looks amazingly similar to one I saw posted here that's why I am asking. It weighs ~ 7.5lbs. and is made of a very hard wood.
My guess Black walnut or the like. I would appreciate any input .

Thank You

Larry

I have never heard of wooden cannon balls, even in antiquity. Before iron or similar type metals, I believe only stone cannon balls were used.

Cool Find! We fired a wooden 12 pounder ball out of a sweetgum mortar. It had a recess routed into it, to hold a GoPro camera. see the footage about halfway through "Sweetgum Mortar Part 2" on youtube... I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.

A wooden cannon ball sounds really far fetched to me, like something I'd see on ebay. There are just so many things that are round and wooden, that the odds of this being a cannonball are... well... slim.
