This Saturday at the Atlanta History Center my reenacting group will be putting on a program depicting the surrender of General William T. Wofford to Federal General Henry M. Judah (portrayed by our own @CheathamHill). Wofford's surrender was on May 12, 1865 and was the last surrender east of the Mississippi River. The majority of men surrendered by Wofford were men that were wounded or at home that were not able to return to their commands. Banditry and bushwhacking were major issues in north Georgia and was the primary reason Wofford did not return to the ANV after his wounding during the Overland Campaign. He was placed in command of the Military District of North Georgia mostly to deal with bushwhackers and deserters.
The programs will be on the grounds of the Tullie Smith house which was built in 1846. It originally sat about 8 miles away but was moved to the History Center in the early 1990s.
