Every time the volunteers, who were dressed as Confederate soldiers, fired their black-powder rifles, the wind swept the acrid smoke over the small crowd of people watching.

Chief Park Ranger John Sutton said the whole Wilson’s Creek battlefield would have smelled that way because smoke from the weapons of thousands of soldiers would have lingered on that hot, windless day 152 years ago during the Civil War.

At 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield hosted the 152nd Battle of Wilson's Creek Ceremony. The highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of:

"the acquisition of 60 acres on the southeast boundary of the park to preserve the site of Colonel Franz Sigel's first position on the morning of August 10, 1861, as he placed his six artillery pieces on the hill and waited for orders to fire on the Confederate forces camped in farmer Sharp's cornfield below. Although not included in the park's orginal boundary, the tract has since by recognized by Congress as a historically significant piece of the battle of Wilson's Creek story."
