He had a reputation for dealing harshly with southern sympathizers and was noted for destructiveness. He was arrested by his divisional commander, Edward W. Hinks, for excessive methods on June 19, 1864. He was convicted but Butler got him off on a technicality. Earlier he captured and promptly hung Daniel Bright, an alleged guerilla.
