How would that doom the South? Plenty of Southerners didn't own slaves and those that did could just sell them before moving West.
Regardless of the actual number of southerners who owned slaves or who where even connected by family ties to those that did, the mainstay of the southern economic system was based on the cultivation and sale of staple crops (cotton, sugar, tobacco, rice) worked by slave labor. Those among the planter class who controlled the southern economic system understood that any diminution of the right to buy and own slaves anywhere the United States held jurisdiction, posed an existential threat to their way of life.
