Why was it so important for Lincoln to preserve the Union?

As I've furthered my web search about the Civil War, one statement keeps popping up: President Lincoln was only concerned with saving the Union and was prepared to go to great lengths to do so.

My question is: What was that important to Lincoln that he was prepared to go to war with the CSA and risk the lives of thousands of men and young men to conquer the South's quest for independence?
