Didn't quite know where to put this. But, since it's a story told (probably over 'tea') by her aunt, Mary Anna Jackson (Stonewall's widow) to Miss Nancy "Nannie" Hill (daughter of Gen. D. H. Hill), I figured here was as good a place as any.

We often heard it said that young people today are entirely ignorant of history, and no appreciation of their own past. Well, that the same might be said for some young (and old) people of any period might be seen in this anecdote.

It was 1887, and Nannie Hill had been visiting Mrs. Jackson and her daughter in San Diego, California. After returning to her home in El Paso, Texas, Miss Hill wrote a letter to the local newspaper, concluding ...
