Sectionalism started way before the 1850's.

The assumption of state debts furnished the occasion of the first threat of secession, and breaking up the government. It was made by the Northern members.
The old Hamiltonian vs Jeffersonian views of the nation at play. The two rejected national banks helped fuel state centered economics.

One of the underlying issues. State bank charters were a huge source of corruption, and the major banking centers, including New Orleans, were getting fed up with it.
Plus railroads were getting to the point interconnecting and going across state lines, as the three major telegraph companies had already done.
Telegraphs and railroads made a national capital market in New York much more dominant, and southerners were not cool with that.

Actually NYC financial interests were deeply entwined with pro slavery southerners. The war threatened investments in plantations and cotton sales to NE and Europe. The mayor advocated secession from the Union and declaring New York a “free city”. It is no coincidence that draft riots and anti black violence occurred there.

Besides corruption in state bank charters, counterfeiting of bank issues and checks made it risky to do business with some one outside your state or region.
