Why did Lincoln favor Burnside so much in 1862?

But as Sam Elliott so eloquently put it, in his portrayal of Buford at Gettysburg. Burnside no doubt had Washington on his back, "Wires hot with messages. "Attack!, Attack!""

They wanted him to move, but surely no one told him to continue with a battle plan once circumstances changed that much. I doubt if Lincoln would have been upset if Burnside cancelled Fredericksburg.
