Disease conditions in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi were not good leading up to the Civil War. Immigrants did not go there and whites left if they could. Though the climate was harsh on the plains and in the northern states, disease was not a burden for immigrants.

The amusing thing is the reference to the "south" and "south hating". Missouri was rapidly becoming a railroad state. Texas made money on cotton during the Civil War, and had been little damaged. Georgians were taking a decidedly Whiggish view of Yankee dominance, and their railroads also recovered. The state that originated secession, Jeff Davis' home state, and the state in which the Confederate army fought for four years, had a common economic problem: physical destruction, and Yankee unwillingness to fix it.
Richmond is the best example of a city that was unnecessarily destroyed, and it in that case it was Confederates who failed to provide for an orderly surrender.
Virginia had little in common with the cotton south. But many Virginians did end up in Texas.

Republicans believed that once given small plots of land, former slaves and Indians could learn the latest methods of soil conservation from government schools. By using techniques that conserved the soil, people could stay on the same tract of land for many years, building communities that were loyal to the Union. Northerners policy makes did not want to industrialize the South and the West. Instead, linking proper land use with a clean environment and a stable social structure, the intended to promote farming communities and strengthen the yeomanry that provided the foundation for republican government. Republicans ignored alternative visions of "civilization" and government, especially those voiced by Indians. pp136 An Agrarian Republic by Adam Wesley Dean

The Bigoted views of the Yankee toward the South may of had something to do with Immigration. Maybe the Yankee didn't Zone the South for European Immigrants? Interesting study of Republican Land Use Theory, which didn't work in places like the South and West because the Soils were Different. Yankees had determined the Southerners were Dis-Unionist because of their Farming Practices. Also explains why Investment was limited in the South. Republicans thought that with the Labor Contract, small farms would spring back up and be productive. It didn't happen because of the lack of Capital.

Early 60s from Cuba, after 69 Coolies migrated from CA. 70s some direct Immigration form China to the South by Labor Recruiters.
There were fewer than100,000 Chinese living in the entire US in 1870, half of whom lived in California. There was definitely not 100,000 Chinese living in the South.

The Sicilians often found their work regulated by armed overseers and their pay dispensed in tokens for the company store. During the 1890s when Sicilian and Black workers united around labor demands the Sicilians became targets of lynch mobs, including the Tullulah lynchings.
That reminds me of the Matranga Mafia during that time period. New Orleans Police Chief DaviDavid

When New Orleans Police Chief David Hennessey was killed during this time period..
allegedly by the Matranga Mafia. Matranga was acquitted . However eleven of his men were taken from jail and lynched.

“Immigrants” refers to persons moving across international borders with the intention of remaining permanently in the receiving country.

The South recruited Whites. Immigrants might of touched ground somewhere else first. But eventually, the South is going to rely on White emigration. Planters try to replace the Negro with the Chinese, with limited success. Eventually they will recruit Whites from Chicago and other Northern Cities and elsewhere.

In an interesting article in this week’s New York Review of Books, there is a discussion of Jim Crow Era Italian Immigration to Louisiana. As many as 20,000 Sicilians immigrated there during the 1880s, largely recruited by planters hoping to replace black workers who had moved North.

Sicilians were arriving in Louisiana from the time of the Barbary Wars, when they served with the American Navy to combat the pirate nations.

Search Youtube for Italians and Italian Americans in the Civil War. or us the Links given below. Take a look at these YouTube videos. There you will find muster rolls of the Italians and Italian Americans serving. Here is a list of the Neapolitans and Sicilians who served with the US Navy in the War with the Barbary Pirates 1801-1805
