Who is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Greatest Miser”?

Thanks for this, @DBF and especially for the thread on whale oil. Fascinating stuff - the rate of change experienced by those living in the late 19th/early 20th centuries is mind boggling.

I'm sticking to my guns though, Standard Oil dominated the kerosene market and the rest, as they say, is history.
For public streets in bigger cities much mention is made of someone lighting the lanterns along the streets, and checking them every so often during the night on patrols. What sort of propellant was used, gas?
Lubliner.

Camphene, mostly. Explosive and dangerous.

Then came kerosene, from crude oil. Read about it here:

It doesn't mention Rockefeller or his Standard Oil Company, but he and they dominated the market and owned it until Anti-trust laws were enacted and enforced in the early 20th century.
