My friend Bill Curtis has brought the following to my attention.

Whitworth ‘B E S T’ Pattern Number B678

http://historical.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=6076&lotNo=50488

“Lot 50488 Rare Confederate Marked British Whitworth Military Percussion Rifle.... (Total: 1 Items)2012 Apr 30 - May 1 Arms & Armor Signature Auction - Dallas #6076.”

Fake Alert - This rifle (B 678) has been recorded by the Whitworth Research Project for over twenty years through owners in South Africa, Italy, and US Auctions and the word "Natchez" has never been on it before. Apart from this, the CSA purchases were not of this enhanced and more expensive version. A fine rifle has been marred by a faker stamping “N A T C H E Z” into the wood just in front of the trigger guard finial.

Please circulate this to all who could be interested in exposing fakery.
See a list of Whitworth Rifle Warnings here.

Thank you Mr. Minshall for bringing this travesty to light. How unfortunate that in this day and age someone would deface a genuine and well know collectible antique arm. The very act of defacing it is criminal in intent. It is just too bad that the perpetrator will most likely never be caught or punished.
