Whitworth guns at Gettysburg

It doesn't sound like these guns were captured. Do you know how they ended up back at Gettysburg? Would the veterans themselves have brought them up in the years after the war when the first monuments were being built?

Looks like that gun,on the left,needs a Hub and Bearing job! I'd never treat my bass boat trailer like that.
 
How did they get there? They certainly weren't captured. I suspect that the National Park Service acquired them and brought them there. Thank you NPS. It's my favorite thing about our government.
 
The Whitworth's at Gettysburg belonged to Hardaway's Alabama Battery and while they were extremely accurate, they were rather delicate and complicated cannon. The original English carriages were too lightly built and they tended to fail when the guns were fired at longer ranges. Also, the shells in the photograph are/were original shells for the Whitworth and at today's prices; each stack shown would be worth about 20K.
