His wounding at Shiloh prompted the regiment to promote him to Lt. Col. but Gen. Bragg had already appointed a replacement and refused to honor his promotion. Whitfield complained to both the War Department in Richmond and to Jefferson Davis about his situation. Davis directed Bragg to honor the promotion.
