QM General's Letters Sent Book:
Richmond July 8th 1862
Lt Col Larkin Smith
A{sst} QM Genl

Sir,
Your letter of the 4th Inst. inquiring, if when officers killed in battle are brought to the City for interment, the expenses of burial should be met by the Department, was referred to the Secretary of War for instruction.
In reply he states, "that the only interment recognized as obligatory on the Government, is to bury the dead upon the field of battle. This is recognized as the fittest place for a soldier by Military men themselves. Genl. Z. Taylor gave directions that he should be buried where he fell."
