In 1878 the Laidley Calvary forge was adopted as an improvement over the cavalry forges used during the Civil War. So what the shortcomings of the standard Civil War cavalry forge? To me a traveling forge-cart of 1878 would not be all that different form a Civil War one.

It was said that the Civil War cumbersome limber-drawn version was too heavy and the bellow type blower to big.
