Not sure who replaced Wheat (Maybe Hayes?), Richard Taylor lead the brigade later in the year. Then Hayes, Zebulon York took over when the 1st was combined with the 2nd Louisiana (after Spotsylvania).
This becomes confusing: The ORIGINAL so-called Tigers or Tiger Rifles was only a battalion (fewer than ten companies) commanded by Wheat as a Major. (Regiments are commanded by colonels.) Following his serious wound and lengthy recuperation following Bull Run was when they were unmanageable and may have even been threatened with being broken up then. Because of their notoriety the other Louisiana regiments of Lee's army began calling themselves Tigers as well; by the time of Gettysburg the name had spread to the Louisiana Brigade. So when referring to Louisiana Tigers it's necessary to be specific as to exactly which formation you're referring to and at what point in the war.
Not only were these guys fighting a common enemy, but they were always in friendly "competition" with their fellow Confederate troops from other Southern States.
Kind of like the American & UK Commonwealth guys during WW II.
