I've been searching for information on George W. Sanders who served in the 1st. TN. Co.D Turney's Reg. and I believe he's in above photo far right first row #21...if so, the men in above photo were described as members of Forrests Escort...Was there a connection between Turney's Reg. and Forrest?

It isn't normally a commander's job to get personally involved in combat, but Forrest had a flair for recognizing the moment when a determined attack by a small force could make a difference. The escort company, led by himself, was his 'ace in the hole' for crucial situations.
Sort of like Napoleon's Imperial Guard, but smaller

There was a George H Sanders who served in the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry, which was Forrest's Cavalry. Some members were in the escort. @east tennessee roots might be able to help with the right George Sanders!

Not sure about the connection, but both George W. and George H. Sanders applied for pensions. George H. (Henry) was from Lauderdale County, and in the 3rd TN (Forrest's) Cavalry. George W. from Moore County, served in the 1st TN Infantry, (Turney's). This was the 1st Tennessee that served in Virginia.
