Well it appears he was commanding the Survey of the Northwest Lakes in Detroit. Right after the fall of Fort Sumter he was reassigned to Light House Duty?

Detroit Daily Advertiser, Monday Morning edition of April 15 1861, Departure of Capt Meade.

"We regret to learn that Capt George G. Meade, Topographic Engineer commanding the Survey of the Northwest Lakes, has been ordered to Light House duty at Philadelphia Pa. Captain M is a man of high order of talent in his profession and by his uniform kindness of disposition has won himself troops of friends in the city. It is gratifying to them however that in losing him this place is to be filled by so worthy a man as Capt Macomb, who was for a long time connected with the Survey of the Lakes, and is known to most of our citizen."
