What makes Nathan Bedford Forrest Honorable?

I just entertained myself reading through this thread again. And it occurred to me that Forrest will not be considered honorable now or in the foreseeable future due to contemporary standards and ideals. Yet he may have been very honorable by the standards of his society and time. But I reckon we already knew that, didn't we?
He was certainly aware of his shortcomings, maybe more than most. In his letter to his son, he advised Willie to follow his mother's example and not his father's! I don't know - maybe today we could do with a little more 'antique values' as Shelby Foote put it. If those old boys rose from their graves and looked at our modern society, I think they might turn around and head back!
