Many soldiers performing support roles for the army were former soldiers rendered unfit for combat due to injuries, such as missing or stiff limbs. My ggg-grandfather went home after receiving a shoulder wound, there's no mention of his having lost the arm. My question is - what was the range of injuries that forced soldiers out of combat roles? Some officers continued serving after losing limbs, would this include captains and lieutenants, and would requiring a cane preclude a combat role for officers?
