I know this is a crazy question but... is there any sort of commonly agreed on division of Tennessee into the three parts it is so often described as having? And if so, have these changed over time? I see so many references to East Tennessee or West Tennessee - but I can't really pin down where one part changes into another.

As a native Tennessee I always viewed West Tennesse as everything west of the Tennessee Rive as it flows north; East Tennessee as everything east of the Cumberland plateau/Mountains; and Middle Tennessee as everything in between. The border line of Easter and Central tme zones is a good approximation too
Do you think that's the traditional view too? Fir instant, in CW times?

At least the western part of that - that is, what's west of the Tennessee River - seems to agree with descriptions I've read in more or less "period" writings like Wyeth's life of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
