I always thought the comma was misplaced. Instead of "If you want to smell hell, jine the cavalry," it should be "If you want to smell, hell, jine the cavalry."
That's like the Mark Twain line about what the little girl said when she learned her family was moving from Missouri to Nebraska. According to the Huskers, she said "Good, by God, we're going to Nebraska". The Show Me Staters thought it was "Goodbye, God, we're going to Nebraska."
